Nunsense

Carol Varden commands the stage as Mother Superior with impeccable comic timing, while Diane Pincince brings down the house with her showstopping high soprano in 'Holier Than Thou' — a perfect opening for Theatre Works' triumphant first season at the Masonic Temple.
Dan Goggin's "Nunsense" opens Theatre Works' 24th season — and marks the company's triumphant debut in their beautiful new home at the Masonic Temple on Clinton Street. The show's premise: the Little Sisters of Hoboken are putting on a fundraiser to raise money to bury sisters accidentally poisoned by the convent cook, Sister Julia Child of God. Director Louie Lamoureux infuses the show with the energy these five nuns need, and has them walk into the audience in several scenes. Musical director Mary Jo Rett plays the keyboards while bantering with the cast. Choreography is by Shannon Lewis; the Grease set is by Mark Anderson; nun costumes by Sharon Charette.
Carol Varden commands the stage as Mother Superior Sister Mary Regina — her tight-walking imitation in "Turn Up the Spotlight," her Rush scene, and her cooking-with-the-BVM bit are all hilariously precise comic work. Diane Pincince as the second-in-command Sister Hubert steals the show's climax with her high soprano showstopper "Holier Than Thou." Connie Anderson is a hoot as Sister Robert Anne, whose habit humor includes impressions of Cher, Heidi, Pippi Longstocking, Princess Leia, and Katharine Hepburn; her three solo songs each hit their mark. Danielle DeRotto keeps the crowd in stitches as the forgetful Sister Amnesia — especially in "So You Want to be a Nun," in which she alternates her own soprano with a lower voice for her puppet, Sister Mary Annette, with remarkable skill. Rounding out the cast is 14-year-old Emily Luther as Sister Leo, the novice ballerina, who delivers a lovely "Benedicite" and earns the audience's affection with her comic Dying Nun ballet. So for a comical visit with wacky nuns in their old habits, be sure to catch "Nunsense" at Theatre Works' wonderful new home in Woonsocket.

The Boys Next Door
This very funny yet very touching play focuses on the lives of four retarded men who live in a communal residence under the watchful eye of a sincere, but increasingly despairing, social worker. Filled with humor, the play is also marked by the compassion and understanding with which it peers into the half-lit world of its handicapped protagonists.

Forever Plaid

Sylvia
Greg and Kate are empty-nesters who have moved to Manhattan after twenty-two years in the suburbs. Greg brings home a labrador/poodle mixed breed dog he finds in the park who becomes a wonderful companion for him and a rival to Kate. Ultimately, Greg and Kate compromise and Sylvia becomes part of the family.
